Tim and I awoke this morning, both feeling pretty ‘blah’. I think it’s because of the weather. We’re both gagging for some sun so we can get out on our bikes, but this weather just isn’t allowing us to do anything outdoors.
Eventually, after a few suggestions, I decided that a bit of retail therapy might make me feel better. But I didn’t want to do traditional shopping, I wanted to go and look for a bargain. There is nothing that cheers me up quite as much as bagging a bargain.
We decided to head towards the Longsight Market and Levenshulme. Next door to the Longsight Market is an asian cash and carry which came up trumps in the food department. Best buy: a whole bag of fresh ginger for 99p!
The market itself didn’t prove too successful, but eventually we had a result in a small second hand furniture store in Levenshulme. There are a few shops I often go to on the A6, but this was a totally different one. At first it looked like it stocked only prime crap, but if you looked very closely there were a few items with potential.
Whohoo. I couldn’t wait to put it in the lounge.
This steamer trunk was on sale for £50. I loved it! I wanted it. Tim wasn’t so sure. I had to give him my usual ‘just trust me, my love’ – line. And he agreed! But I didn’t want to pay £50. So I offered the shop-keep a tenner less, and he agreed. Personally I think it looks pretty good in the lounge. I wonder what the NCI stands for? Probably initials of the owner …
I really like the lounge. I am looking forward to doing the finishing touches and making it all look good, but that will come with time.
I managed to find a place that sells the picture rail hooks etc so that we can hang pictures off them rather than drilling holes in the wall. It also means that it will be so much easier to move them around, if we wanted to.
The other improvement in the lounge is the new (old) fireplace. That was another ebay purchase. The tiles were broken, but I managed to get a new set (also on ebay!). Now all we need is for the wall around it to be painted, and then we’re done in here.

I bought some really strong ones to hang the big mirror above the fireplace.
Tomorrow I hope to do some picture hanging. I will take some pictures of them too.
My corner cupboard is now up, thanks to Tom, my builder. I think it looks quite nice there. It is difficult to get the full picture, but it looks like it ought to be there.
So, slowly, slowly things are taking shape.
